Technology is a part of life. But do you know who’s responsible for all those emails in your mailbox?
It started with “let’s do it.” That’s what motivates most when they think about starting a new business. But only the best are able to turn that “let’s do it” into a powerful journey that’s full of ups and downs.
Mailigen started as an idea between four guys who were running a web design agency at the time. They all had passion for new technology and they all believed in email as the digital communication channel. This idea became one of the core values of our company, but the road that led there wasn’t simple.
The Power of Habit
“Education is king.” Our CEO Janis Rose can tell you he didn’t plan on becoming a CEO 8 years ago. He just wanted to build a product he believed in. Of course, that’s easier said than done and sometimes, you have to take matters into your own hands to make it all happen.
If you want to be a winner for an infinite time, you have to learn how to apply habits that will lead you there. Passion is good, but passion alone will not be able to scale up your business when the time comes. Building a company comes from two things – self discipline and passion. You need to have passion for what you do, but without the discipline to work on your business every day, you’ll get nowhere. And self discipline comes from your habits.
Janis buried himself in books that would unlock the power to change his habits. “Thick Face, Black Heart” by Chin Ning Chu changed his life. “The Power of Habit” by Charles Duhigg made him start new habits. Robin Sharma’s advice on getting up early made Janis develop one of the most important habits that improved the way he lived and operated Mailigen.
We developed habits that allowed us to get somewhere. It involved getting educated about things we never knew anything about. It involved holding workshops for our team, also known as Mailigen Skills Lab, which is a Friday tradition where a member of the team shares their knowledge on something to other colleagues. It involved developing habits that made us get up early every morning and work on a business for the past 8 years.
Challenges and Failures
Every entrepreneur knows how this feels. You work on something, everything goes really well, and then you just can’t scale it up to double your revenue and reach new objectives. Don’t worry, Mailigen was exactly in the same boat.
Mailigen’s first challenge came from being too slow. The company grew quickly and we soon realized that we need help. But if you’re Latvian, you know that asking for help isn’t very big in our culture. In fact, in some cases it can almost be seen as a failure. But by accessing mentorship, we were able to solve our first stage of problems.
Our second challenge came from a server overload. It happens. And if you don’t have that knowledge, you could easily spend 24 hours locked out of your server. It happened to us. In those 24 hours, we were sent complaints. People asked for a refund. We had to communicate with customers. But we did and that challenge is now a part of our story.
We accepted failure. We still eat it for breakfast every day. It became a part of our life until we decided that it’s time to scale up, no matter how much that might hurt our pride. And by asking for help, we were able to address the problems that came our way and solve them. That’s what it’s all about, isn’t it?
Since then, Mailigen is facing problems every single day. We have new challenges – but instead of running away and focusing our attention on something else, we are addressing those challenges as early as possible and working as a team to solve them.
31st of March 2010 was Mailigen’s birthday. The official day the company was born and the beginning of an incredible journey.
In 2016, we went through a rebirth phase, we had to re-position our brand to stay in line with our growth. With changes in our design, we also had to make sure our platform’s speed and delivery service improved. We added system improvements, optimized pricing, and new features. We changed platforms and introduced automation to keep up with our customer’s demand.
2016 was also the year we had the pleasure to introduce our customers to new integrations. We started relationships with partners like Sumo, Optimonk, and Sendible.
2016 was a huge milestone in our business and it wouldn’t have been possible if we didn’t ask for help and address our challenges. But as you can see, it took a lot of years to get to that important milestone. It was our passion, our habits, and our incredible team that helped us get there.
Our story is your story
